Engaging High School Students in Science Careers: Lightning Talks and an Evening Walk

Friday, March 29, 2019

The  Fairchild Challenge’s Second Annual Lightning Talks and Evening Walk workshop, hosted by FIU-Fairchild graduate student Nichole Tiernan took place on March 19. The workshop aims to offer unique advice to high school students who all have some level of interest in pursuing a career in the sciences. Miami-Dade high school students had the opportunity to hear from six graduate students from FIU (Christina BurnsDonna MolfettaNick Palermo) and UM (Tim PerezOlga Tserej Vazquez) about their path from high school to science. After brief 5-minute Lightning talks from each graduate student, the group had refreshments and then walked around the almost full moon lit garden with flashlights in search of night blooming plants and nocturnal animals.
