Saturday, September 23, 2017

In September our graduate students Nichole Tiernan and Jonathan Flickinger (academic advisor Dr. Javier Francisco-Ortega, Florida International University) travelled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to participate in Science Engagement Week as part of the Botany in Action Fellowship Program of Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. The four-day event provided training and practice in communicating scientific research to the public. Tiernan and Flickinger joined four other fellows from across the country who are performing plant-based research and are committed to to educational outreach. Their research projects on the genus Plumeria (frangipani) and Myrtaceae (the myrtle family) in the Caribbean, respectively, will be highlighted in the Tropical Forest Cuba exhibit scheduled to open at Phipps in 2018.
